The phrasing comes from the Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman in his book Thinking, Fast and Slow.
In the AI industry today, leaders like OpenAI and Andrej Karpathy use "System 2" to describe the next frontier of AI: models that don't just "predict the next word" (System 1), but actually reason through logic steps before answering.
